I remember a conversation I had with a police detective some 35 years ago. He was telling me about what a mother had told him over the phone about her teenaged son. “Once he’s out of the house, he’s not our problem.” The detective, who served an upscale suburban community, was explaining to me that parents can be irresponsible and in his mind almost criminal in their neglect of children.

Parents are the most important people in a child’s life. They set the tone for everything. If parents abuse drugs, the children are likely to abuse drugs. If husbands beat their wives, their sons will likely be wife beaters too. If parents divorce and abandon their children, those children are not likely to become model parents either. Parents are the front line in the prevention of drug abuse and there’s so much they can do to try to secure the best possible future for their children.

The trouble is parents want schools to do everything. Teachers become parents, because “once he’s out of the house he’s not our problem.” What happens in the home is more important than what happens in the classroom. Parents can set the example by being informed. That begins with understanding the dangers of prescription medication. What is in your medicine cabinet? Do you know what medications are in the house, and how much of that medication you have? Are medications out of date?

Take an inventory and keep track of what is in the house.

If a medication runs out too quickly, that is a sign that someone might be abusing that drug. Talk to your kids and make this a family project.

Teens especially will experiment with drugs. They hear about the experiences of their friends. They want to be cool and part of the crowd. If they experiment with the drugs in your house, what will happen? If you have a pain medication, what will that do? If you have a stimulant of some kind, what will that do? What are the dangers of overdose? Ask yourself, what are the dangers to my child?

Take control. Be the parent, the adult. Have an open conversation with your children about drugs, especially the drugs in your house. Stay on top of it and know the inventory. Make connections with principals and teachers at the school, with your family doctor and pharmacist, and with local law enforcement officials.

Be savvy. Know what is in your house, in the community and the potential negative impact it will have on your family. Drug abuse prevention starts in the home with responsible parents. Having this family discussion and having a plan about how to handle the medications in your home will be an effective preventative measure.

Addiction can be defined as a family disease. It is a fact that the entire family suffers with the addict. This is the reason that professionals consider treatment of the family to be the part of the whole treatment of addiction.

First, it is important to understand that the tendency to become addicted is genetically transmitted. This is proved by a research that has been undertaken to know the exact reason of raise in the cases of addiction.

When it comes to the family suffering, there are a number of ways a family suffers with the addict. According to a study, about one third of the families in the United States have at least one member in the family with a substance abuse problem.

About one-fourth of this problem exists in nuclear family. In such families, there are more chances of divorce, domestic violence, anxiety, child abuse, depression and general medical problems.

When an addict & the whole family gets into the recovery mode, many effects of depression are supposes to go away in a couple of years. However, there needs to be an active participation from the addict, the family & the recovery professional.

It may be quite difficult to deal with addiction in the family as it’s hard to see a family member in trouble but one needs to be strong enough to cope up with such troubles. The most important thing to remember is that there are many important issues to explore as soon as someone in your family requires help. First, you need to make out whether you are contributing to the core problem or working towards eliminating it.

Here are certain contributions you may be making to increase the problem:

•	Making yourself believe that you are responsible for the whole scenario rather than caring for yourself.

•	Getting judgmental towards the addicted person.

•	Concealing the addict’s behavior & covering up for them.

•	Doing certain things for the addict that they require to carry out all by themselves.

•	Accepting your lack of control & giving up after some trials.

•	Paying attention to your feelings & needs rather than taking care of the addict.

Here are certain important facts that you must know regarding how to deal with addiction:

•	The family must suggest some actions to the addict that are required to help him get out of the addiction.

•	Individual counseling also works really well with the addict. Here, a professional puts an effort to provide some cool tips to get out of the situation and fight addiction bravely.

•	People who are fighting against a drug or alcohol addiction, a variety of detox treatments are suggested and these treatments may be conducted in a hospital, specific clinic or even a treatment facility.

•	Certain types of addiction also require adept or special type of medication. For instance, a drug called nicorette helps a lot to those addicted to smoking.

•	One can also contact self recovery groups where special help is provided to addicts. Addicts are taught how to recover & maintain their self esteem here.

•	Different types of out-patient facilities are also available where the addict is provided adept treatment. He needs to visit where facilities regularly in order to meet their program expectations.

The task of helping an addict overcome his problem may be difficult but with hard work & determination, it is possible.

Most of the times this addiction pertains to some substance abuse, medical drugs abuse or alcohol but the actual problem is, the sufferers never realize that they need help and treatment to get rid of their nasty addictions.

Numerous alcohol and drug addiction treatment centers are spread across all states in US. They include both public and private centers. Most of them offer wide range of services catering to different problems. But sufferers need to first realize and accept that they need help than only they can be benefited from these services.

Treatment programs in these centers are designed keeping in mind the common and general addictions. Before joining any such program try to take suggestion from your doctor. The treatment program should match to your requirement and should address to your specific problem in order for you to benefit from the program effectively.

Different kind of problems requires different kind of treatment and rehab method largely depends on the severity of the problem and the underlying actual cause of the problem. You can even speak with the people who already got treatment so that you can get a clear idea about what you can expect at these centers.

Most of the programs include 5 treatment levels: detoxification, primary care, extended care, partial and out-patient follow-up care. Doctors analyze cases individually and suggest which level fits best for the individual. If the condition is severe and addiction is prolonged than all 5 levels of treatments may be necessary.

from Bill Urell

When it comes to addiction treatment, there are numerous options available. One of the main approaches to treating drug addiction includes using different methods of behavior therapy. Some drug addiction specialists promote the use of various types of medications. In many cases, having a unique blend of behavior therapy and medication therapy can be quite effective.

Most professionals implement a drug addiction treatment based on the standard principles of treatment. These principles help to outline important considerations when it comes to deciding on the best method of treatment. Here, we will introduce you to the basic principles of addiction treatment for drug addictions.

1. The first principle of treatment for various types of drug addictions is based on the fact that there is no universal treatment for drug use. Drug addiction treatment should be tailored to suit the individual needs of the patient and not be too generalized.

2. The second principle of treatment in drug addictions is that these methods should be available at all times. When a person decides to cease the use of drugs and seek treatment, it is important that resources are available, or that moment may be lost and the individual may continue using.

3. There are many things that should be taken into consideration when deciding on a drug treatment plan. These things include the actual drug abuse, medical history, psychological state, and even any social issues that the person may be experiencing.

4. Once the individual has been treated for drug addiction initially, it is important to continue with a follow up program, aftercare and continuing care. This will provide continuity of service. Recovery is an event not a destination

5. When a person is receiving one form of treatment, they should receive other, ancillary or supportive forms as well. This will help to encourage and motivate them throughout their progression of fighting the disease.

6. When an individual has an underlying mental illness, and they are being treating for any type of drug addiction, it is important that both are approached at the same time. Many times, these things are closely related.

7. It has been found that going through the process of detoxification is extremely successful in many situations, but treatment should not stop at this.

8. If a person is being treated for drug addictions against their wishes, it can still be effective. One can never tell when that moment of enlightenment may occur.

9. It is important to understand that many individuals will experience relapses which include using drugs again during treatment. It is important to monitor all individuals to ensure that this is not an issue.

10. If a person has a disease that is considered deadly or contagious while under going treatments for drug addictions, it is important to make certain that the proper accommodations are made.

11. It is important to understand that the treatment of a drug addiction can take a while before it is truly effective.

When looking at various approaches to treatments for people who are suffering from drug addiction, it is important to remember that there is not one particular method that can be used with every person. Just as each person is unique; each addiction treatment should be different based on the number one principle of treatment.

from Charles Maverick

People struggle with a lot of problems these days. Stress is one of the most damaging factors that influence our lifestyles, because this is the main reason why we think about picking up other nasty habits. Most people that have a very stressful situation in their lives start thinking about finding solutions at the bottom of a bottle, and to get there they drink the contents.

It is very easy to become an alcoholic, but it is very hard to let go of this problem. Hurting ourselves or others is the easiest thing we can do, and we might do this without even knowing it. Alcohol is a very difficult problem, but not one without a solution.

People become addicted to alcohol in the blink of an eye. When they search for a way out, something keeps pulling them back in. This is one of the main reasons why outside help is very important, and it can be found at an alcohol addiction treatment facility.

One of the most important aspects about being an alcoholic is denial. You keep lying to yourself that this is a problem that you can overcome on your own and you don’t need an alcohol addiction treatment to get you through the problem.

Have you ever wondered why there are some many people that quit alcohol for a certain period of time and afterwards they jump to their old nasty habits again? It is because life is not always challenging, and sometimes you can enjoy it without alcohol. But when things go downhill, the first thing they grab is a bottle. An addiction treatment center can help you overcome that urge to go back to drinking.

Most of the times, alcoholics do not see their habits as something that represents a problem. Only outside help can really show you the error of your ways and with the support of the people you love and the staff of a reliable addiction treatment center, you will be able to overcome a dark period in your life.

Another very important aspect that an alcohol addiction treatment facility should take into account is the one of alcohol running their patients’ lives. They may stop drinking, but this doesn’t mean they have overcome the problem of alcohol.

The end result of an alcohol addiction treatment should the confidence patients need in order to take life into their own hands without alcohol. Even though meetings are necessary for a certain period of time, the addict should be able to be alcohol-free without them. If their schedule is divided between work and meetings, with little family time, then alcohol is still a part of their lives.

Each person that becomes an alcoholic usually has other problems in their life. This is one of the main reasons why they pick up drinking in the first place. What an addiction treatment center does is teach the addicts that no problem has an alcoholic solution and each of them can be overcome with ease.

Keep in mind that you can find addiction treatment centers all over the place, but not all of them can provide the help that you need. If you need one that can put you back on your feet and boost your self confidence to overcome each obstacle you encounter, then you should visit the website thewatershed.com.

from Daniel Manson

A shiny firmament signalling a new dawn becomes the dream of every drug addict. After all, a drug addict is a human being like you and me and he also becomes desperate to end his drug ridden sojourn to switch over to a new era in his life. The addiction treatment of every alcohol rehab center emphasizes on bringing a new dawn in the life of the unfortunate alcohol victim so that he can also lead a sober life like most other common human beings.

It’s really unfortunate that people are irresistibly drawn to the sudden boosting power of alcohol and they can hardly imagine that such occasional rosy picture by a few pegs can become so disastrous. It has been found by most of the alcohol rehab centers that people starts drinking just as a hobby or out of curiosity and at the end he becomes solely dependent on the liquor. This is true that the alcohol or any drug is empowered with incredible amount of energy which makes people highly imaginative for the time being. He starts feeling jubilant and the colourful liquor lands him in the seventh heaven.

In most of the cases, the Addiction Treatment initiates with the alternative doses of medicines, which has got the capacity of raising the energy level of people by a sustainable amount? The alcohol rehab center focuses on a prolonged addiction treatment where the chemical dependency is slowly waved of. Perhaps the dream of forcing everybody to bite the dust in this competitive world becomes the root cause of intake of alcohol in many cases and unfortunately the victim starts biting the dust instead.

The socio economic problems force a lot of people to take help of alcohol as they want to leapfrog by any means. Their desperation leads to the formidable devastation even without their knowledge. Most of the alcohol rehab centers focus on psychological treatments along with their conventional addiction treatment to help the victim in regaining his confidence. It’s easy to advice not to loose confidence, but in reality most of the people remains confused throughout their lives. A professional alcohol rehab program attempts to make you a confident person so that you can face the challenges of the modern world when you return after recovery. The caring attitude and candid advice of the professionals of alcohol rehab center will surely set you back to your normal rhythm so that you can also lead a sober social life in this world.

from Peter sams

Information about Heroin Addiction Treatment

Drug addiction is a complex but treatable brain disease. It is characterized by compulsive drug craving, seeking, and use that persist even in the face of severe adverse consequences. For many people, drug addiction becomes chronic, with relapses possible even after long periods of abstinence. In fact, relapse to drug abuse occurs at rates similar to those for other well-characterized, chronic medical illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, and asthma.

Soon after injection (or inhalation), heroin crosses the blood-brain barrier. In the brain, heroin is converted to morphine and binds rapidly to opioid receptors. Abusers typically report feeling a surge of pleasurable sensation, a “rush.” The intensity of the rush is a function of how much drug is taken and how rapidly the drug enters the brain and binds to the natural opioid receptors.

Heroin is an illegal, highly addictive drug. It is both the most abused and the most rapidly acting of the opiates. Heroin is processed from morphine, a naturally occurring substance extracted from the seedpod of certain varieties of poppy plants. It is typically sold as a white or brownish powder or as the black sticky substance known on the streets as “black tar heroin.” Although purer heroin is becoming more common, most street heroin is “cut” with other drugs or with substances such as sugar, starch, powdered milk, or quinine.

Drug addiction treatments and detoxification via the administration of drugs such as Naltrexone and more recently Buprenorphine have been shown to help the heroin addict maintain abstinence and thus can prevent the need for future a detox. While no magic bullet, pharmacology advances have made the successful treatment of heroin addiction more hopeful and the detox more humane. Another treatment Ibogaine, while not FDA approved and thus not available in the United States has been shown in recent studies to alleviate the cravings for heroin and may be one of the more viable therapies in the future.

Most heroin users are not receiving treatment. Most recent data indicate that there are approximately 112,000 patients in narcotic maintenance treatment. Barriers exist to both access to narcotic maintenance treatment and effective treatment, despite the science on the neurobiology of heroin addiction and the evidence demonstrating the effectiveness of treatment in reducing drug use and crime and preventing the spread of HIV and HCV. An important reason for some of these barriers is that narcotic maintenance treatment remains controversial. The science has not yet overcome the stigma of addiction and public perception about narcotic maintenance treatment.

Heroin addiction treatment has involved Methadone used to treat opiate addiction for more than 30 years. Methadone suppresses heroin withdrawal symptoms for 24 to 36 hours. Although the patient remains physically dependent on the opiate, the craving from heroin use is reduced and the highs and lows are blocked. This heroin addiction treatment permits the patient to be free from the uncontrolled, compulsive, and disruptive behavior associated with heroin addiction. While many methadone maintenance clinics (long term methadone use) are available, we believe the most effective use of methadone in heroin addiction treatment is found in utilizing the drug to assist in the gradual withdrawal from heroin addiction.

from Charles Maverick

There are many things in life that shouldn’t have been discovered. One of those things is drugs. The world would be a better place without these dreadful things that create addiction and therefore make a lot of people suffer. Unfortunately, we cannot turn back time and eliminate the problem at its roots, but we can however stay as far away as we can from drugs and do not give in to temptations.

Even though we have the choice to stay away from them, lots of people around the world are using drugs on a regular basis. Once you are already in the middle of the problem it is very hard to face it, let alone eliminate all by yourself. With the help of those who care about you and others with more experience in the matter, you will be able to follow a drug addiction treatment that will provide the much needed results.

We as people are very different from one another. Some of us may have better strength when it comes to facing and eliminating drugs from our lives. On the other hand, there are many people that do not have what it takes to follow through the entire drug addiction treatment program, or if they do, once they are through, they tend to go back to their old habits.

The people who seek help in most drug addiction treatment facilities are usually imbued the idea that there is something wrong with them and their addiction is like a disease. On top of it all, some of their specialists even say that relapse is something they should expect at some point, because it happens.

Well, to be honest, these facilities are best avoided. Even though the person that suffers from this horrible problem struggles greatly, there were a lot of wrong choice made at one time and now they pay for them. A successful drug addiction treatment program should get to the bottom of the problem and make those persons realize that what they are doing is wrong and harmful.

If an addict is constantly repeated that what they suffer from is a disease, their self-confidence will be lowered significantly. When you suffer from a disease, it is very easy to give up because you think there is nothing you can do to fight it. A successful addiction treatment program should target the improvement of the addict’s self-confidence primarily.

The fight against drugs is not an easy one, and you have your work cut out for yourself. But the final results and the choices you make from that point on depend solely on you. If an addiction treatment program will succeed in improving your self-confidence, after the program is over, you will have the power to make the right choices and stick with them.

There is a very small success rate of conventional addiction treatment programs, and the reasons why have been presented afore. If you are struggling with a drug problem and you want a solution that can provide the results you are looking for, then you shouldn’t make the same choices as everyone before you.

You should be smart and go for something else, something better, something that will really help. Don’t trust someone that tells you there is nothing you can do to escape this terrible problem. If you want your confidence to be lifted and if you want to benefit from an addiction treatment program that works, visit the website thewatershed.com.

from Andrea Schneider

There are many different types of addiction treatment or detox centers and each of them will have a different function and role in the detox process. There will usually be a medical doctor present for each detox procedure that takes place in the detox center. A medial staff is there to assist the addict in rapidly detoxing from the substance of abuse and to make the process as pain free as possible. When a person enters a detox center they are usually doing so under the advice of their doctor. Most detox centers will only take a patient that has been referred by a medical doctor.

An addiction treatment center is available for a variety of substance abuse problems. These problems can include alcohol addiction, narcotic abuse, and chemical dependency.

Many times a person will enter a detox center and have multiple addictions that need to be dealt with. In these circumstances a detox center will usually deal with all of the addictions so that the person can cleanse their body of all toxic substances at one time.

The more addiction that a person has when they enter a detox center the longer it will take for the substance of abuse to be flushed from the body and the more counseling and therapy a person will need once the detox center has helped them through the withdrawal of their addiction.

The Internet is a great resource for finding the best addiction treatment centers. In your search, you should focus on finding those centers with high success rates for treatment completion and long-term drug freedom. It’s also important to find addiction treatment centers that have 24-hour supervision over their members. Remember: You want your loved ones to have their freedom, but drug addicts have typically not build up the self-control that’s necessary to quit cold turkey.

from addiction

If you pay attention to government surveys, you’ll learn that more than 20 million people suffer from addiction to alcohol or street drugs, or they are dependent on prescription drugs that they have been abusing. But a recent survey of American adults shows that the effects of addiction stretch much farther than this.

In 2004, 63 percent of adults surveyed said that addiction had impacted their lives, most of them because of a family member’s battle with drugs or alcohol. That means that more than 135 million people struggle either with their own addiction or that of a family member or someone close to them.

This doesn’t measure the number of children who are without a father or mother because they are in jail, in rehabilitation or simply gone. Or the numbers of children who have parents at home but suffer neglect or abuse because of the drug use. It doesn’t measure the lost productivity or the number of businesses that have had to close because an owner lost everything to substance abuse or an employee embezzled enough to close the doors.

Substance abuse and addiction exacts a terrible toll on America. And successful rehabilitation programs can be few and far between. Many rehabilitation programs state success rates between 5 and 20 percent.

“The Narconon Program is very proud of its 70% success rate,” stated Derry Hallmark, stated Derry Hallmark, Director of Admissions and Certified Chemical Dependency Counselor at Narconon Arrowhead. Narconon Arrowhead is one of the country’s leading drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers, located in Canadian, Oklahoma.

“In our forty years of delivering rehabilitation services and in our 120 centers around the world,” Mr. Hallmark added, “we have been able to return many thousands of people to drug-free lifestyles. Our drug-free program addresses the three primary barriers to addiction rehabilitation: cravings, guilt and depression. We employ a thorough detoxification that uses a dry-heat sauna plus exercise, vitamins and minerals to break through the cravings. Educational and counseling phases of this rehabilitation program enable those in our program to leave guilt and depression far behind and develop new life skills for a drug-free life.”

from Daniel Marcus Manson

Addiction to anything is harmful. Some kind of addictions is less harmful, while some others can assume life threatening proportions. Alcohol addiction and drug addiction falls in this category. Alcohol abuse is a very common malady that is affecting even the best talented persons in our country. However, holistic addiction treatment methods are found to be fruitful to lead addicts on the path of recovery.

Most of the unfortunate souls caught in the tentacles of addiction never realise its dreadful impact till very late. Many end their lives as total wrecks. Another very pathetic aspect of alcohol or drug addiction is that it is not only the addict that suffers, but his family members, friends etc are forced to suffer the brunt. They never get a peaceful and fruitful life when such an addict is part of their life. This makes it all the more important to try addiction recovery treatment as early as possible.

Addiction is like quicksand. Once somebody falls into it, there is no recovery without any outside help. This outside help can come in the form of addiction treatment and rehabilitation centres. There are basically two types of addiction treatment. The effectiveness of these two differs vastly due to their varied approaches. The older type addresses only the physical aspect of addiction, while the new holistic approach treats the mind as well as the body of addict and rehabilitates him or her back into the society.

The speed of recovery depends on the level of cooperation from the addict himself. The emphasis is on self education. The addict is made to understand the pitfalls of addiction so that he willingly stays away from drugs or alcohol. The induction of holistic addiction treatment methods has greatly increased the reliability of rehabilitation. The number of recovered addicts in our midst vouches for this fact.

In most addiction cases, it has been observed, that the human mind plays an all important role in making a person an addict. Most people resort to alcohol and drug abuse to escape from the painful realities of life. So it is very important to help the addict gain a certain level of mental strength to cope with everything that comes before him. Holistic addiction treatment gives more emphasis to this.

Addiction treatment starts with the analysis and detox stage. Detoxification is a stage where the body of the addict is cleansed of any harmful remains of chemical toxins induced due to prolonged addiction. These toxins make the addict crave for more intoxicating substances all the time. This craving disappears after detoxification.

However, the real challenge starts here. If the addict is discharged at this stage, it is hundred percent sure that he or she would again relapse into addiction as the main culprit, the mind, is still not cured. The second stage, which is designed to address the mind, starts now. Proper counselling, group activities and the likes help the addict to gain self confidence, courage and wisdom. It is heartening to note that most addicts who went through this step of addiction recovery have found a new life after graduating from the asylum.

from Bertil Hjert

Addiction Intervention is a phase that enters a person’s life prior to a recovery program. This is a kind of a loving get together. This makes the person feel good about the fact that all his loved ones & dear ones have gathered with a single purpose of making her recover. As soon as he realizes that all of his loved ones care for him & are getting together for his betterment. The addict should be able to recognize the fact that he is lucky & loved by all.

The main goal of an addiction intervention is to make the person agree to get admitted to an addiction treatment program or a rehab center. The main purpose of this program is to make the person understand that he must give up addiction. The will power in the individual will do the trick. It will make him understand that he has visited a rehab center to give up an unhealthy habit that has been affecting his health, his relationships & life as a whole.

Addiction intervention creates a kind of support system that lets the individual grow & chard positively.

Everyone around must also communicate the consequence do the person because these types of decisions are life altering & difficult to take. Hence, there is a need of professional intervention in this case.

Under the program of addiction intervention the individual gets admitted to a drug rehab & gets attention & treatment for his problem.

Addiction intervention can be divided in to two categories namely, informal & formal:

- Informal intervention

It is a kind of conversation that you may have with the person you are concerned. Here, you need to share some of your observations, asking different questions & even suggesting that the patient requires a professional addiction treatment. These types of intervention are a great way to discuss the med of professional help for addition in private. This intervention can ultimately have positive effects on the person in case, it is planned out in advance & gets conducted in a comfortable place as soon as the addict is calm & sober.

When getting an informal intervention, you need to make sure that you get the real facts about alcoholism & addiction. Try to take to someone close about your concerns before the intervention. It is very important to pick the right time & place for the intervention. Plan way before the intervention about what you will be saying & then mentally prepare yourself for the discussion.

You should take special care about conveying your affection & respecting the addict. Don’t forget to express your concern. You need to quote specific examples of how addiction has affected the life of addict. Try to offer assistance. You need to put across several options where the treatment is available. Don’t expect a miracle to happen overnight. It takes time. Keep providing your support & assistance to the addict & improvement will definitely follow.

- Formal intervention

This is quite different from an informal one. Here, a trained professional is required to act as a mediator. The professional helps in developing a well structural & preplanned conversation between the addict & support group during the intervention.

In this type of intervention, a group of people & the addict try to explore the way the addiction has affected his or her life. This type of intervention is required where the addict has refused to avail help many times together. The formal intervention is structured in a fashion to help the addict take important steps & address their addiction issues & then getting in to an agreement for a treatment program on an immediate basis.

Make sure that an addiction intervention program does a lot of good to the addict.

Emotional Freedom Techniques or EFT works successfully in controlling addiction and even substance abuse problems. There have been a lot of testimonies from people who have been cured of their addiction and abuse problems.

There various kinds of addiction and EFT work in almost all of these. Some of the common types or addictions or addictive patterns include illegal drugs, smoking, alcohol, eating or food, sex, shopping, among many others.

The results of EFT in these addictive conditions, according to numerous testimonies, are immediate and most of the time permanent. EFT works first and foremost on curbing the cravings of people in order to empower them to turn their backs from their addictions. EFT experts cite that addiction is not really about the object, substance, or the habit that people are addicted to or crave for, but the issues beneath the addiction.

EFT nips the problem or addiction in the bud, so to speak. It zeroes in on the underlying causes of addiction or what prompt people to smoke, get drunk, engage in excessive sex, overeat etc. Of course, the causes or ‘triggers’ differ from one person to another.

Most of the time the addiction can be traced from emotional and mental issues such as stress, anxiety, anger, guilt, fear among others, some of which may have scarred the person or caused trauma. These emotional or mental traumas or issues should be settled first, before the person can be freed from addition. If not, he or she will just move from addiction to another.

The process of facing one’s addiction is not as simple as it sounds and should not be forced under any circumstances. People with addiction should not be forced to withdraw from their addiction right away. It should be done gradually and in the most natural way. Each person should progress following their own pace.

Likewise, there is a different starting point for every person. To each his or her own, as they say. The important thing is that the person is relaxed or comfortable enough so that the process of eliminating his or her addiction will be effective. Acceptance is the key. The person should be reminded that despite the phobic condition, the person is loved or the he or she loves himself or herself. Eventually, the addiction will subside.

EFT has solved long-term addictions involving alcohol, cigarettes, and even illegal drugs or substances. Since most of these addictions are deep-seated, it takes many EFT sessions for the individuals involved to overcome the addictive substance’s hold on them. EFT experts or therapists usually press the addiction sufferers for the first time they smoked, drank alcohol or took drugs. Then they ask them about the circumstances at that time the urge or craving to do so appear. What is their mental or emotional state at those times when the cravings persist? Eventually, the desire or urge to smoke, drink or take drugs would lessen then finally disappear.

EFT works for some of the most unusual addictions as well such as nail-biting, hand-washing, hoarding, ice cream, computer, chocolate, or other food cravings.

from Gean Biffulco

The entire concept of addiction has suffered greatly from a misconception on the part of most people. The confusion comes about in part because of a distinction between whether specific drugs are “physically” or “psychologically” addicting. Historically the distinction revolved around whether or not physical withdrawal symptoms occur when an individual discontinues using a drug; what we in the field now call “physical dependence”. However, years of research has demonstrated to us that focusing on this physical versus psychological distinction is a distraction from the real issues at hand.

Strictly from a clinical perspective, it actually does not matter very much what physical withdrawal symptoms occur. Physical dependence is not that important, because even the dramatic withdrawal symptoms of heroin and alcohol addiction can now be easily managed with appropriate medications. Even more important, many of the most dangerous and addicting drugs, including methamphetamine and ***** cocaine, do not produce very severe physical dependence symptoms upon withdrawal. What really matters most is whether or not a drug causes what we now know to be addiction. More specifically, the compulsive craving and use, despite all of the negative consequences.

This is the crux of how the Institute of Medicine, the American Psychiatric Association, and the American Medical Association define addiction and how we all should use the term. It is really only this compulsive quality of addiction that matters in the long run to the addict and to his or her family. Thus, the majority of the biomedical community now considers addiction, in its essence, to be a brain disease – a condition caused by persistent changes in brain structure and function. The changes in brain function results in compulsive craving that overwhelms all other motivations and is the root cause of the massive health and social problems associated with drug addiction. A definition of drug addiction that is commonly referred to is “a brain disease expressed in the form of compulsive behavior”. It is important to correct the common misimpression that drug use, abuse and addiction are points on a single continuum along which one slides back and forth over time, moving from user to addict, then back to occasional user, then back to addict. Extensive research studies support the view that, once addicted, the individual has moved into a different state of being. Very few people appear able to successfully return to occasional use after having been truly addicted.

Unfortunately, we do not yet have a clear biological or behavioral marker of that transition from voluntary drug use to addiction. However, evidence is rapidly developing that point to an array of cellular and molecular changes in specific brain circuits. Moreover, many of these brain changes are common to all chemical addictions and some also are typical of other compulsive behaviors such as compulsive overeating.

The complexity of this brain disease is not atypical, because virtually no brain diseases are simply biological in nature. All, including stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, schizophrenia, and clinical depression, include some behavioral and social aspects. What may make drug addiction seem unique among brain diseases, is that it does begin with a clearly voluntary behavior – the initial decision to use drugs or drink alcohol. Moreover, not everyone who ever uses drugs goes on to become addicted. Individuals differ substantially in how easily and quickly they become addicted and in their preferences for particular substances. Consistent with the bio-behavioral nature of addiction, these individual differences result from a combination of environmental and biological, particularly genetic, factors. In fact, estimates are that between 50 and 70 percent of the variability to becoming addicted can be accounted for by genetic factors. Although genetic characteristics may predispose individuals to be more or less susceptible to becoming addicted, genes do not doom one to become an addict. Over time the addict loses substantial control over his or her initially voluntary behavior, and it becomes compulsive. For many people these behaviors are truly uncontrollable, just like the behavioral expression of any other brain disease. Schizophrenics cannot control their hallucinations and delusions. Parkinson’s patients cannot control their trembling. Clinically depressed patients cannot voluntarily control their moods. Thus, once one is addicted, the characteristics of the illness – and the addiction treatment approaches – are not that different from most other brain diseases. No matter how one develops an illness, once one has it, one is in the diseased state and needs treatment. In the case of the addict or alcoholic treatment is best defined as admission to a drug rehab, addiction treatment facility or alcoholism treatment facility. Please note that not every person requires an inpatient drug rehab or addiction treatment facility, but research shows that most individuals do require structure of some kind to break the vicious compulsive cycle associated with drug addiction and alcoholism.
