Discovering If Your An Alcoholic
One of the earlier signs that you may be developing problems with alcohol is a high alcohol tolerance. When you start ordering stronger drinks and finding that it takes more time and money to get a buzz going, you are most likely becoming a problem drinker.
The next early sign that you’re becoming an alcoholic is developing the habit of drinking in secret. When you are sneaking drinks just to the avoid the criticism of friends and loved ones, it should be pretty obvious that you have a problem. If you find yourself telling elaborate lies to cover up for the fact that you’ve had way to much to drink, you need to come to terms with the fact that you have a problem.
A sign that you are highly at risk or becoming, or may already be, an alcoholic is when you are using the alcohol to numb the emotional problems that you are having. Do you use alcohol as a crutch so that you don’t have to think about the things that disturb you? If so, you need to come to terms with the fact that you have a drinking problem. Then your next step is to find help. Admitting your powerlessness over alcohol is actually Step One of the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous.
Step One of the 12 Steps
The first step of A.A. is absolutely essential to your recovery. It begins with admitting to yourself that you have zero control over alcohol and that it has come to rule your life. That it is not a limited time thing, you will never be able to regain the control over drinking that you may of once had. As the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous says, no real alcoholic ever regains control over alcohol.
Step One of the 12 Steps says, “We admitted we we’re powerless over alcohol [Our Addiction] – that our lives had become unmanageable.” This step is the key to recovery, if you can’t complete this step you’ll never even get started with the Twelve Steps. You’ll give anything else a try… until you’re completely convinced that you’re powerless over your addiction. Step One of the Twelve Steps is the one Step that you must get one-hundred percent right.
If you are a real alcoholic than you will have no chance to regain control. No matter how hard you attempt to discipline yourself.
