Guide and help for problem gamblers including dealing with gambling carvings and finding help and treatment.

There are more and more gambling opportunities in the world than in the past. With the advancements in technology there have been more opportunities on the internet in forms of online casinos, or gambling rings. Gambling addiction starts with the individual. There are many who will say that it is not their fault they became addicted, but they are only searching for a scapegoat. Gambling addiction is defined as the inability to restrain yourself from gambling causing you to reap the consequences personally and sometimes professionally. However, there is treatment for such a cause. Some treatments to help with gambling addiction are:

1. Gamblers Anonymous- This is a program that is similar to Alcoholics Anonymous. It is a twelve-step program and is free to obtain recovery from the gambling addiction. The program allows you to rely on a “higher power”. With the extra help, the gamblers anonymous course helps gambling addiction victims conquer their addiction in a healthy manner.

2. Treatment Centers- For those who are unable to stick to the gamblers anonymous program, there are treatment centers that isolate you from the initial threat of gambling. In the treatment centers, you can get rid of your addiction in a less conventional way. With the different methods that treatment centers offer will allow you to see the addiction side of your problem.

3. Environment Withdrawal- The final method in the gambling addiction treatment is without treatment centers and gamblers anonymous. This is through withdrawing yourself from the temptation of gambling. When you do this treatment, it is hard on you. Quitting at once is not always the best method to take. There are times which this is the last resort.

Gambling addiction is not to be taken lightly. It is an addiction that can cause dire consequences that are not always easily mended or not even at all. When you have an addiction, you need to remember to have a support team that is there to help you along the way. Surrounding yourself with people who support your addiction is never the best idea for you. Have people who know how to stay away from that certain type of addiction and introduce other alleys for you to do. When you overcome your addiction, you can feel better about yourself. Overcoming anything not only makes you feel good about yourself, it also boosts the way you view others. Get down to the problem of the gambling addiction and find the right treatment that works for you. In doing so, you will not lose those who you feel close to.

Even though drug addiction is a complex disease, assigning a definition for that disease is actually quite simple. Drug addiction is, in its simplest form, defined as the continued compulsive use of drugs in spite of adverse health or social consequences.

The definition of drug addiction should also include the fact that it is a state of heavy dependence on a specific drug. Generally, its thought of as a physical dependence, but in actuality, there is a psychological addiction as well as an emotional dependence. Some say that it is compulsive and pathological drug use or substance dependence.

Drug addiction is also a behavior disorder as the initial drug use is generally done as a reaction to a behavior or situation that seems out of control to the user. The user seems to have no other choice but to use that drug because of the bodys dependence on the fact that the drug will remain present in the system.

A distinction should be made between drug use and drug addiction. It is possible for people to use drugs without becoming addicted, but that is generally limited to prescription drug use. People who take drugs to cope with a physical ailment do so to control pain or the adverse effects of a physical condition. Those drugs improve the quality of life for the sufferer, but they are not necessarily addicted to the drugs.

To be dependent on a drug or addicted to it the user must take the drug regularly, and they experience unpleasant symptoms if they stop using the drug such as nausea or sleep disturbance. Substance abuse or addiction is present when a person uses a drug despite the harm that it causes to their system.

There is a difference between drug abuse and drug addiction. Drug abuse occurs when a person uses excessive amounts of a drug at one time or frequently. Drug addiction is present when a person cannot stop using the drug and stopping the drug seems like an impossibility.

Of course, no definition of drug addiction is complete without noting that it is both a physical dependence as well as a psychological one. Physical dependency occurs when a drug has been used habitually and the body has become accustomed to its effects. Psychological dependency is present when the drug is used habitually and the mind has become accustomed to the effects the drug produces.

When drug addiction affects a persons life, the definition of that drug addiction becomes a bit less important than the reasons why people use. However, it can help multitudes if a definition is specified so that a better understanding of drug addiction can occur.

Drug and alcohol addiction can have devastating effects on individuals as well as their family members. With time, as the alcoholic is affected both physically and mentally by alcohol and drugs it becomes increasingly difficult to lead a normal life. Extended alcohol and drug abuse can harm the brain, heart and other vital bodily organs.

Drug and alcohol addiction is a widespread problem, but many individuals overcome this life-threatening illness with an addiction treatment program. Addiction treatment is often a necessity for a person to recover from addiction. An addiction treatment program focuses on a life long cessation of the addiction and provides a comfortable and relaxing environment for treatment.

The initial stage of treatment concentrates on the patient’s physical dependence on drugs or alcohol. The treatment includes the suppression of cravings for alcohol or drugs by medicine, expert help, detoxification services and counseling sessions.

There are various treatment programs designed for the specific needs of the alcoholic or addict, including:

·	Free-standing residential treatment: In this treatment program, the patients stay in the treatment center under the supervision of a well-qualified team of addiction professionals.
·	Hospital-based treatment: These types of treatment programs are available in hospitals and are designed for those individuals who have developed chronic medical problems.
·	Long-term treatment: Long-term addiction treatment is designed for people who have undergone residential addiction treatment and need extended help and supervision.
·	Outpatient treatment: In this type of treatment, patients generally reside at home and attend the addiction treatment programs.

Long-term abstinence from alcohol is cultivated by the combined programs of preventative counseling and medication. Individual and group counseling sessions provide the patient with information and experience that will help their continued sobriety.

To achieve these goals, treatment programs:
·	Address the medical and psychiatric needs of the individual
·	Work on development of interpersonal relationships
·	Improve the daily living skills of the patient
·	Provide nutritional and medical management counseling
·	Provide Detoxification services
The ultimate goal of the treatment program is to provide patient with the tools for achieving long term sobriety.

Addiction can come in the form of alcoholism, substance abuse and chemical dependency. Addictive drugs include heroin, opiates, cocaine, crack, crystal-meth, prescription drugs and many other harmful substances. Substance abuse ultimately results in self-destructive behavior, which can be devastating for both for the addict and their loved ones.

The major hindrance in the addict’s path to recovery is denial. They are often unable accept the problem or sometimes even ignorant of it. This is the reason why doctors often prefer special addiction intervention programs for the people who are addicted before they start with their treatment.

Addiction treatment centers have different methods of treatment for different levels of addiction. Those who are less affected by addiction can be treated by counseling and therapy, group meetings, and even phone counseling. The most complete treatment is onsite treatment in which an individual who is addicted stays in a facility while they are encouraged to take on new habits.

Addiction treatment centers are often surrounded by natural beauty, such as lakes and mountains with comfortable facilities such as pools, spas and hot tubs. The environment is often much like a resort so that the patient feels comfortable and does not find the treatment difficult.

Even long time addiction can be cured in an addiction treatment center by using a holistic approach. The addicts undergo the addiction rehabilitation process where they are taken out from the spiral of addiction that had prevented them from living a more fulfilling life.

At the addiction treatment center, the counselors and the support and medical staff are committed to provide each patient with individual consideration, care and support. These centers and the programs are often available at affordable prices.

If you’re reading an article about drug addiction treatment, chances are that you, or someone you care about, are having a drug problem and you’re trying to find out how to fix it. The problem may be new, or may have been going on for years. Whichever is the case, it’s vital to use the right treatment method for your situation if you don’t want to still be dealing with the problem years from now.

What are your options?

Out-patient treatment: Often these programs are the least successful. A drug addict needs help getting through the pain of withdrawal. The symptoms can be so severe that addicts take the drug again to get relief, despite the fact that they really want to quit. There is also the problem of environment. Staying in the same environment where the person took drugs, with all the same problems, friends, habits, and so on, makes it very difficult for them to change.

Detox programs: While supervised detox programs can help an addict get off a drug safely and make sure their basic needs are taken care of during the process, a true addict will often need follow up in an addiction treatment center. The detox center helps them through the withdrawal process, but doesn’t not address the issues that caused them to take drugs in the first place. Many addicts make the mistake of thinking that once they’ve stopped taking the drug, they’ll be able to stay off it on their own. Generally, that’s not the case – although there are exceptions.

Narcotics Anonymous: Like Alcoholics Anonymous, this program has helped a lot of people. But many also drop out and relapse. And others find themselves going to meetings for the rest of their lives. Some go several times a day. But the reason they need the daily support, for years on end, is because the cause of their addiction was never successfully addressed – as it would be in a good addiction treatment center.

Drug replacement therapy: The most widely known replacement drug is methadone. People who formerly took heroin or other narcotics take methadone instead. They’re still addicted, but they’ve switched to methadone. Methadone is extremely difficult to kick, much worse than heroin, and people sometimes wind up on it for the rest of their lives. Methadone advocates often lead addicts to believe that the drugs they’ve taken have caused irreparable brain damage that will prevent them from ever being able to function without drugs of some sort or other. However, people are generally not tested to see if this actually is the case so they go on methadone for no good reason; they could have been actually cured of their addiction and the problems that set them off in that direction in the first place had they done a different type of treatment.

Short-term residential drug rehab: These programs usually last for 30 days; enough time for the person to get through withdrawal, but not much else. Very little, if any, actual rehabilitation has occurred and the causes of the addiction have not been addressed. You can expect the vast majority of graduates to relapse – possibly as many as 95%.

Long-term residential drug rehab: This method has proven to be the most successful. It removes the person from their environment so they are free of their usual influences and problems and can focus on resolving their addiction without distraction. The first step is withdrawal, then the person begins to address why they became addicted in the first place and is taught life skills that help the overcome those issues. To wrap things up, they are sent off with a program for a new life. A good long-term residential addiction treatment center also includes getting the person in good physical health and condition.

While not everyone makes it, the chances of relapse after long-term residential drug addiction treatment are far less than with any other treatment model.

If you’re looking for help, check out the long-term residential model first. While the others may be more convenient, there’s no point in first trying something with a low success rate as you are likely to have to deal with recovery and relapse cycles that could go on for years. Getting the right treatment in the first place, on the other hand, could completely change your life, and the addict’s, within a few months.

The words drug abuse and drug addiction are often used interchangeably, but in reality, there is a difference between abuse of a drug and addiction. Addiction does begin with drug abuse, but addiction is much more than a lot of drug use. It is much more than that.

Drug abuse is basically the repeated or uncontrolled use of controlled substances. It can also be defined as the habitual misuse of a chemical substance. This definition includes the use of drugs for purposes other than what they were intended. In fact, drug abuse has a range of definitions, but all suggest disapproval at the use or overuse of a drug for non-therapeutic reasons.

Drug addiction, on the other hand is when the body has an uncontrollable craving for a drug and absence of that drug in a persons system causes adverse effects such as insomnia, uncontrollable shaking, and nausea. Drugs interfere with the normal functioning of the brain making it altered to the point that functioning without the drug is virtually impossible.

When a person is addicted to drugs, they continue to use the drug despite adverse health reactions and possible damage to their bodies. They disregard their personal health in favor of continuing the feeling that they get when they are on their drug of choice. Stopping usage is just not a viable option for them. This is when abuse becomes addiction and when it must be faced and addressed head on.

Understanding drug abuse and addiction can help in preventing drug use to rise to problem proportions. When you know exactly what you are dealing with, its a little easier to begin looking for treatment options.

Whether you or a loved one is abusing drugs or are addicted to drugs, treatment needs to be sought as soon as possible to help ward off serious health implications. Treatment can have a profound effect on both the drug user, but also on society as a whole. Healing the addicts in our society improves social and psychological functioning and makes for a more peaceful community and world.

In fact, drug abuse is the number one cause of preventable illness and death in the United States. It doesnt matter if we talk about cocaine, heroin, or alcohol, a drug is a drug and those drugs cause problems with the human body. It is preventable and education is the first step.

Drug abuse and addiction are blights on society. Both have been around for years and years, but if we take the time to recognize not only the difference between the two, but also the signs and signals that indicate drug use, we can begin to heal ourselves both as individual people and as a society.

Many people are frustrated when a family member gets into a drug addiction treatment center only to gets back on drugs afterwards. Every day we read news articles about drug overdoses with stories of parents who did everything they could, including drug addiction treatment, to help their kid. Having lost their own loved one, they network to help prevent further deaths. However, with all the good they do, one thing they often overlook is improving the quality of drug addiction treatment And other than prevention, it’s the one thing that could have made the difference.

Parents and loved ones who haven’t been involved with drugs – or maybe they tried drugs and used them occasionally but never became addicted – don’t understand what to look for in a drug addiction treatment center. Even if they choose residential treatment, they’re often lured by the 30-day solution. But they rarely work. Here’s why.

It takes a week or two to just get through withdrawal. That doesn’t mean the drug is no longer in the system, but the sometimes intensely painful period is over. However, often the drugs left in the system are still urging the person to take them, even if they don’t want to. So, a good drug addiction treatment center will help clean the drugs out of the system, and then build up the body so it’s healthy and no longer experiencing physical cravings.

The addicted person has reasons why they chose to try the drug and why they kept taking it. These are often deep-seated. They had personal problems that living somewhere other than in the real world helped them escape. They’d rather feel the way they feel on the drug than the way they feel without it. This is understandable. Life can be pretty hard. So, to stay off drugs, the person has to have a solution – another way to successfully cope with the problems of life and be happy. A good drug addiction treatment center will also address that.

Next, who are they hanging out with? Are they surrounded by people who take drugs or drink? If so, the chances of staying sober are next to none. And, truthfully, if they are really cleaned up themselves, they’ll want to hang out with people who don’t drink or take drugs – they’ll want to spend their time with others who have a similar mindset. A good drug addiction treatment center wouldn’t consider treatment complete if the person wants to go back into a drug or alcohol-laden environment. And they’ll help them figure out alternatives.

Under the ‘who are they hanging out with’ category is also this question – Are they around people who belittle them or blunt their sense of purpose, self-esteem and value? Or someone whose expectations they’re constantly trying to live up to? Parents or a spouse who is ‘disappointed’ in them, their lives or even their career choice? This can come in many forms. The person could even be overwhelmed by societal conditions they feel they can’t do anything about. A good drug addiction treatment center will also look into this.

Without all of these factors being addressed, the person doesn’t really have their lives sorted out and, consequently, they’re still at risk.

Whether the problem is with street drugs, alcohol or prescription drug addiction a successful drug addiction treatment program will address all these issues -and it can rarely be done in 30 days. Be realistic in your choice of drug addiction treatment and your chances of success will be greatly improved.

Some people dont like being quoted statistics. But when we speak of statistics on drug addiction, the numbers are actually important. These numbers can help us identify problem areas with drug addictions and help us better understand what exactly is going on with drug addiction in the country.

For example, marijuana is the most commonly used illicit drug in the United States according to a 2005 survey. Over seventy-six percent of the population reported using marijuana in that years time.

An estimated 15.9 million Americans aged twelve or older reported using illicit drug in the month prior to the 2005 survey. That statistic represents 7.1 percent of the population 12 or older. This is an increase of almost 8 percent from the previous year.

Drug addiction statistics can be a little bit scary as well. Consider that in 2003, there were nearly 20,000 deaths directly attributed to drug use both legal and illegal. Of those deaths, about 3 percent were to people 21 years of age and under.

In the year 2001 alone, use of the club drug Ecstasy increased by 58 percent from the previous year. This statistic was calculated by the amount of people who were admitted to a hospital emergency room with Ecstasy overdoses.

Statistics on rehabilitation center admissions also paint a sad picture of drug addiction. In 2006, there were over 175,000 people who checked themselves into a rehab facility. It is estimated that 5 percent of those people returned to using drugs after they were released.

Methamphetamine use is on the rise as well. In 2006, a whopping 15 percent of the population reported using meth as their primary illicit drug. This can be attributed to the fact that meth is easy to make with common household items and produces a significant high for the user that cannot be obtained by using any other drug.

Perhaps the scariest statistics on drug addiction are the ones that involve our youth.

Addiction is a much broader concept and we cannot relate it to alcoholism only. The basic difference between alcoholism and addiction is that the former is only related to something which is liquid in nature, while the latter can take various forms. But one thing is common between them and that is that the overall effect of addiction or alcoholism is one and the same. There is little difference between the treatment meted out to alcoholic patients and addicted ones. Addiction Treatment is a long, drawn-out process because it involves a person who is recovering from addiction to alcohol, drugs, gambling, or sex. One should remember that during Addiction Treatment, support from family members, friends and other close ones is essential.

Before going for Addiction Treatment, make it sure that the professionals are trained enough to handle patients suffering from a particular kind of addiction. Since there are quite effective treatments for addiction, it is always better to ask your doctor which treatment is the best for your patient rather than blindly following what others say. Always remember that the very idea of undergoing Addiction Treatment is to develop a new life with healthy practices and the support of family members is essential. Always make sure that you choose you sponsor very carefully before undergoing a Addiction Treatment. A good sponsor is one who will understand your condition and help you in your rough times.

You and your sponsor should have a clear understanding of what you expect from each other and leave no questions unanswered. There are different support groups that deal with addicted patients. It is recommended that you attend the support group meetings and know what is important for you from these meetings. Addiction Treatment is not an easy journey. Recovering from addiction is a very challenging and long process that requires high perseverance and tolerance. The joy of recovery is something very different, but the process through which you recover requires a high level of commitment from you. Talk with those people who have recovered successfully through Addiction Treatment. They will be more than happy to share their experiences with you. Remember it is you who can help yourself to come out of addiction. Addiction Treatment is the tool through which you will learn to live a new life and develop healthy practices.
